The Future of Canada’s Automotive Industry
The automotive industry is Canada’s largest export-based manufacturing industry and is critical to economic prosperity, especially in Ontario.
However, Canada faces growing competition for automotive investment from within and outside of North America. The Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing is committed to building and disseminating knowledge about Canadian automotive manufacturing in order to support efforts to grow and improve the competitiveness of the industry moving forward. Much of this work is being carried out in collaboration with our partners, including the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA) and the Ontario Auto Mayors. Staff also provided support for the 2018 Drive to Win Report authored by Réal (Ray) Tanguay, the Vice-Chair of the Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing’s Board of Directors.
The Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing anticipates contributing to several automotive-related projects in 2020. These include a Decade in Review report that examines the evolution of Canada’s automotive industry between 2010 and 2019, a report based on conversations with senior representatives of Canadian-based automotive parts manufacturers that discusses their perspectives on the future trajectory of the industry (Summer 2020), and an analysis of international trends in support for automotive industry investment (Fall 2020).
