Report lists Trillium Network accomplishments, examines the evolution of Ontario manufacturing over the past decade, and makes strategic recommendations to guide the future of manufacturing in the province.

LONDON, OCTOBER 25, 2024 – The Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing is excited to announce the release of its ‘Trillium @ 10’ report. The report identifies several important changes to Ontario’s manufacturing sector over the past decade and argues that a well-conceived strategy to guide Ontario’s advanced manufacturing sector is vital to maintaining prosperity.

Manufacturing remains a critical part of Ontario’s economy and its overall prosperity. However, challenges to the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector persist. Productivity has stagnated, the sector’s contributions to GDP have decreased relative to other sectors, and most employment growth over the past decade has been concentrated in low-paying industries and occupations. Addressing these challenges and improving competitiveness requires bold, innovative solutions.

The report makes strategic recommendations across three key areas: investment incentives, talent and workforce development, and automation and technology. It calls for a more focused and aggressive, but recalibrated, approach to investment incentives. It recommends greater engagement with universities and a manufacturing-specific strategy to engage and retain skilled tradespeople. Finally, it recommends tying investment incentives to productivity improvements, which can only be achieved through more rapid adoption of novel and innovative automation and tooling technologies.

The findings and recommendations made in the report are meant to supplement and complement the work of the Ontario Advanced Manufacturing Council and the Toronto Region Board of Trade/Business Council of Toronto

Additional insights are shared in this week’s episode of Making it in Ontario, the official podcast of the Trillium Network for Advanced Manufacturing. An overview of the report will also be available during a November webinar (date and time TBD).
